This week, we’d like to introduce Mrs Joan Thorp, a Brass Music Tutor in our Music Program.

What is your instrument? When and why did you start learning it?

As early as I can recall, I was always attracted to the bright and happy sounds of brass instruments. I didn’t have the opportunity to learn an instrument at my regional schools but I enthusiastically immersed myself in study once I was presented with the opportunity to learn via the local PCYC Band when I was about 13 or 14 years old. Since then, I’ve met many inspiring teachers and mentors and I’ve been very fortunate to have made music my life-long study and profession.

How long have you been teaching at Inaburra for?

As a relief tutor as well as a permanent music tutor since 2016.

What do you do when you’re not teaching at Inaburra?

I own and manage a music publishing company called ‘Thorp Music’ – publishing print music for Bands, Orchestras and Ensembles.  I’m also the Associate Conductor of Southern Brass (formally called Sutherland Shire Brass Band).

What is it that you love about Music at Inaburra?

Inaburra Music’s greatest asset is their talented and nurturing staff. That’s why we chose Inaburra for our music-loving daughter in who is happy and thriving.

As one of our brass specialists, Joan will be teaching Euphonium in 2023 and is available for private tuition. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch should you require any information. geeringj@inaburra.nsw.edu.au
