As you start to consider your commitments for 2024, please make a note of the Music Ensemble times for 2024. The best memories of making music are always of making music with others, as an ensemble. The best way to be engaged in any activity is to share it with others. By joining an ensemble, you are joining a community of musicians. You make friends, share the joy of making music together, and peer teach each other. Within an ensemble students make friends with like-minded musicians and forge deep, long lasting relationships.

It’s never too late to join an ensemble.

Meet the Tutor – Ben Gurton

What is your instrument? When and why did you start learning it?

I play the trombone and I teach the tuba at Inaburra. I started playing trombone in Year 5, I had to convince my school as students weren’t allowed to start playing brass instruments ’til Year 6! I’m that old.

How long have you been teaching at Inaburra for?

I have been teaching at Inaburra for 4 years but did some casual teaching many years ago while living in Erskineville. At that time I was struck by two things; there was a world south of the café down the end of King St, and Inaburra students were some of the most happy, polite and vibrant students I had met. Now I live in Oyster Bay and my son goes to Inaburra!

What do you do when you’re not teaching at Inaburra?

I play trombone for a living, which carries with it many jokes, often including pizza delivery, or just incredulousness. I play for tv shows, pop/rock acts, jazz, Latin, musicals etc. I feel very lucky to do the exact thing I wanted to do as a student growing up.

What is it that you love about Music at Inaburra?

Inaburra has wonderful, passionate music staff that instil a love of music while maintaining high standards of music practise and performance. The music program fosters a strong community and illustrates to the students the pride of achievement through consistently working towards a goal.
